Legionella Biofilm

Legionella, Biofilm and Domestic Water Networks

legionella biofilmFound on the internal surfaces of water piping, biofilm is found particularly at or near heat exchange surfaces where the temperature is ideal for bacterial growth and where there is a sufficient nutrients to help in the growth of the microbiological flora. Most of the nutrients are supplied via the incoming water required by a facility. Most at risk of biofilm buildup are those with larger water distribution systems such as hotels, villas, hospitals, and nursing homes.

The biofilm microbial flora consists of both aerobic (requiring oxygen to live), and anaerobic (lives in the absence of oxygen). This includes a variety of bacteria and some algae (given the proper conditions) and fungi. As a result, other organisms such as protozoa and metazoa will proliferate from the basic nutrients and organisms found in the biofilm.

Short term biofilm treatment solution: Hyper chlorination or thermal eradication treatments are normally used as a short term solution against Legionella contamination. Unfortunately these solutions do not fully penetrate the biofilm and thus will not stop the growth of Legionella bacteria. In fact, recolonization normally occurs within 3 to 5 weeks after one of these short terms solutions are implemented. If control of Legionella bacteria is necessary, the more expensive short terms solutions must be implemented or a long term solution such as the AquaLyse® technology should be immediately implemented.

Long term biofilm treatment solution: When taking into consideration the "real" costs associated to these short term legionella control water treatment methods, including the labour costs of implementation, the AquaLyse® industrial copper silver technology is clearly be the best and most affordable secondary water treatment technology on the market today. When compared to other secondary water treatment technologies such as chlorine dioxide (ClO2), the AquaLyse® technology has proven to be more reliable, easier to implement and offers a "Chemical Free" solution to Legionella control and prevention.
